If you have an infant or toddler at home, you know the frustration of a coughing child who cannot sleep. This disruption can have many negative effects on the whole household. With the recent ban on cough medicines for children under 2, there are very few options to help relieve your child's cough.
How to Stop Coughing Without Medicine
A few years ago my mother suggested rubbing Vick's VapoRub on our daughter's feet before bedtime to stop the cough. My wife and I both laughed at her and politely ignored her advice. Several days later as my wife and I lay in bed, unable to sleep from the coughing in the baby monitor, we broke down and gave this home remedy a try. It was like magic, within a minute or two our daughter stopped coughing. At first we thought this was just coincidence, but have learned this to be fact. We have used this on our infant son with wonderful results also.
The Best Toddler Cough Remedy
It is really easy to do, and our children have found it to also be soothing. Rub a good thick coat of Vapor Rub on the souls of each foot and cover their feet with socks. We use footie pajamas because our children never keep their socks on all night long. Our daughter is now old enough to take cough medicine but we still use Vick's at night to cure her cough. This home remedy has given our children the good night sleep they needed to naturally help their bodies heal. Give this home remedy at try, it is not an old wife's tale.

My daughter had been coughing for 1.5 hrs after going to bed. I came to this site, saw the remedy for Vick's rubbed onto the feet then putting socks on. Within 3 minutes the coughing stopped. This was a God send!

I can certainly vouch for this home remedy. At the first sign of a cough my mother,their grandmother, quickly pulls out the vicks (she adds a little vaseline so the vicks isn't too strong)and proceeds to rub our kids (3 & 4y.o) feet, chest, and back. She did this for me, and now for them. It works!
My 2 year old daughter was coughing badly especially at night. We were all sleepless for 3 straight nights until I read your article in the internet. There was no Vicks Vapor Rub available in store so we bought another brand. Just the same it worked.But I can say that it is more effective if rubbed on the chest & back, aside from the soles of the feet. I can't believe it but the Vicks on the feet totally works!! My DH had been coughing for 3 nights and last night we tried it. She slept all night w/o coughing! Finally mom and dad got some sleep. We put some on her chest as well for good measure too.
Works so well, you won't believe it. Works on any age, adults as well. And I use any brand, whatever is for sale at the dollar store works equally well!
Wow. I just tried this after trying all kinds of expensive herbal cough syrups, and it worked in a matter of seconds. My two-year old could not sleep because of her cough, and now she is peacefully napping. This is incredible!

Ok. I am in total shock. My 2 1/2 year old son was coughing a lot and his sleep was greatly interrupted (not to mention mine!) We didn't have any rub, but I do have the liquid that you put directly into the steamer, same thing. I took a few drops and rubbed it onto the soles of his feet , his chest and his back. Well, like everyone has said...he stopped coughing! This is a godsend!

This remedy really works! Not only does it stop the cough it unstopped my 7 month old daughter's stuffy nose! I use Baby Vick's so the smell is not as strong as regular Vick's. Great tip......I have shared with several friends and family members!

OMG, totally been suffering with this for ages (all of us, not just the coughing boy!) and thought Vicks was just for bunged up noses. I have hideous memories of my mother smearing it on my top lip (eegads, what was she thinking?) Anyhoo, did not have Vicks, but some Swiss alternative called Pulmex and it has worked a blooming treat. Littlun sound asleep and cough free. Genius. Will be telling all my mum chums. Thanks

Thank God I found this! I was heartbroken listening to my 2 year old daughter coughing at 2 am and this was the first result that came up when I googled stopping a toddler's cough. Luckily, we had Vick's Baby Rub on hand. I applied it to my daughter's feet (plus chest and back, for good measure), and I haven't heard a cough since! Unfortunately, I can't get back to sleep now, but at least she's peacefully sleeping again! Thank you so much!

My 22mth old has had coughing fits and tempers were frayed after 3 days and nights of this. We tried a honey and marshmallow herbal cough mixture and also the over the counter variety from the chemist and vicks on the chest and back and also warm water drunk slowly all to no avail.
Have just tried it on her feet with a lot of dubiousness and after 30 minutes there were only a few coughs in the 1st few minutes and now none at all, thanks.

well I was doubtful, but after 2 hours of coughing I thought what have I to lose......and yes within 10 mins of putting Baby Vicks on her feet she seems to have stopped ! Amazing is all I can say, thank goodness. Fingers crossed for the rest of the night
Well....it was worth a try! Both my girls have been couging so I tried it....they are still coughing after 2 hours of it on their feet. Maybe a thicker layer?
My 4 yr old has been coughing for the past two nights due to a respiratory infection. We've done warm baths, benedryl, lots of fluids, and medicated rub on chest. We were told emphatically to stay away from dairy as it will worsen mucous. The ooughing has been terrible. After rocking my son since 4am I did a search on the internet and came up with this remedy. It work almost immediately! I put a thick layer of drug store medicated rub on his feet with cotton socks and he's been sleepiing soundly ever since. For good measure I did rub on chest and back as well. NO COUGHING! Thank God. And thanks for the remedy.
I was 99% sure this would not work for my 2 year old but 100% sure it wouldn't hurt so I ran to the store before bed time to get some Vick's. I put it on his feet, chest and back, put him in his feetie PJs and within 5 minutes, his coughing reduced significantly. He's now sleeping soundly and where last night I heard coughing every 5 to 10 minutes, tonight I haven't heard a cough yet! Thanks so much for this helpful idea! I've been using this remedy for a few years, and it always works without fail. My daughter is now 5.5 years old. So glad to see there are others out there who are able to benefit from this post! I was so excited to try it on myself the last time I had a chest cold...alas, it didn't work :( I figured there wouldn't be a difference. Okay at first I said yeah right this doesn't work, but after about three min it worked!!! Our one year old beat back conjunctivitis last week...only to be left with the most disturbing mid-night cough...as if he had been gargling for two hours and just then decided to cough it all up for the next two hours.

OMG!! My mom had told me about this remedy as well when my first child first caught a cold and his cough wouldn't go away. I just agreed to do it and in my mind I said there she goes with her myths, LOL. This has been around for a long time. I used to get a product called Save the Baby, which they stopped making. (Seems as though anything that is great they stop making!!) It was around for years and years (since the 1700s) and was intended for babies with the croup but I had ALWAYS used it on my kids who are now adults. (The Vicks is so much like Save the Baby) Placed on the soles of the feet after a nice warm bath to open the pores, front and back of chest, behind the ears on the throat and then put the child right into the footie pj's and right into a nice cozy warm bed. It is good if you can nuk it into a liquid and apply but be certain that it is not hot... give it a few minutes to cool down then apply. Blow on it too. I always placed a very small dab right below the nose too. Not too much. I like the vaseline idea to try to thin it down a bit. The throat area is important if it appears they may have a sore throat. It is so hard because they cannot tell us where it hurts or what is wrong. This is a great blog and it appears that a lot of people agree that this is a great product, idea, and help. Even better for your child is an organic version of Vick's sold by Whole Foods. It doesn't contain the harmful substances like petrolatum & it's gluten free for those with sensitivities!!! It's called U Knead & has eucalyptus, Rosemary & vitamin C! Worked for my 2 kids & it made me feel better using a safer product.

I found this remedy online tonight; so I thought I would try it out. My 2 1/2 old coughed a few times after I rubbed some vick's on his feet; so far so good..I hope my little can sleep through the night. Cross my fingers! We'll see after a few sleepless night for my little guy.

Ok so my almost 4 month old son has this dry cough at night that sometimes makes him throw it's so bad. I've been listening to this helplessly for weeks now. After counlessly going to the dr for this cough, the nurse at our family practice told me to call our pharmacist bc they couldn't give us anything for him since his lungs sounded fine and his ears looked great. Our pharmacist advised that based on his age/weight we could give him 1/4-1/2 tsp of Benadryl every 6 hours. I've given it to him at bedtime, but didn't find this to work. After reading all these posts (and listening to him have his nighttime coughing fit for the last hour), I rubbed a slather of vicks on each of his feet and put them back into his feetie PJ's. Voila! The coughing has stopped! Amazing! Thanks to all who have posted!!!
after spending a lot on antibiotics and prescription med my 2yr boy didn't stop coughing. Don't listen to what anyone says. Vapo-Rub on the feet does not work. I did exactly what was recommended, on both my two and four year old, and this was two hours ago, and both of them are still hacking.
Hi this gio thanxs so much for this remedy..my son is 3yrs n he kept caughing non stop. I didnt know wat to do so i rub his entire foot both..n minutes later like 20mins later he stop.he did caught 1 or 2 times but was way better than repeatedly...thanxxss...
Well I posted on January 13th and after a couple hours of relief, the next night and ever since then, the vicks trick hasnt worked. Warm mist humidifier has been running constantly. Any other suggestions from viewers out there, please post them here! I'm at a loss.

haha im trying the trick on my 3 year old now.. who hasnt stopped coughing all day .. its now 1:15 am and I am hoping praying it works. The only thing I didnt have any vapor rub or vicks, but i do have icy hot balm pain relieving.. my method to madness is that i hope the menthol is the trick.. ill return to see what happens and let you all know.. i hear your concern.. the pain of your little one who cant stop coughing..

My 3 year old son had been coughing since last night. I gave him 1/2 tsp. of honey and 1 tbsp. of fresh lemon juice, this is also an old home remedy usually works but not right away. 21 minutes ago after reading this blog, I applied Vapourizing Cold Rub just like Vicks in his feet and put socks on. After 10 minutes he fall sleeps, still coughs but definitely not as much as before applying the Vapourizing rub in his feet. I am hoping that he will get better soon. Rubbing Vicks on my 4 year really worked. He has had a really bad cough all day, no OTC med would work. Within 8 minutes my son was sleep with no cough. This is the best ever.

Don't waste your time or money as this remedy does not work. If your child stops coughing then it happened for a different reason.
Omg this really works :) my 2yr old daughter has been coughing all night non stop... I applied some BabyRub Vicks on both her feet, placed her socks on and placed a little on her chest... And within 10min's no more coughing, she is sleeping peacefully now. Thank you lord and thank you too =D now I just gotta try to go back to sleep.
my 3 year old daughter has been coughing non stop for days now, im heart broken listen to it, she coughs so hard that she gags and ends up vomiting, i put the vix vapor rub on her feet and back and chest and it has been about 10 now and i havent heard her cough anymore! hopefully it will stay that way. poor baby needs to rest! i have tried everything, spoonful of hunny, cough syrup, children's cold medicine. nothing helps! i even gave her a cough drop which she spit out but nothing helps but this seems to be the real deal!

Thanks for the reminder about vicks on the feet! My daughter has suffered from frequent coughing about once each month lately. Tonight she woke up coughing again. For an hour I tried water, humidifier, honey....then I read these posts and was reminded of vicks on the feet. I applied a generous portion to each foot, covered by socks, and now she is sleeping soundly! Such an awesome relief when you feel you can't do anything to help your child!

So my son who is almost 2 has been coughing every night for like a month but tonight it got worse. I've had many doctor trips, where he gets inhalers, tylenol, motrin but the coughing only goes away for a short time. Yes this does work. I applied baby vicks on my son's back and chest along with the thick coating on the feet covered with socks. I then rubbed his back until he fell back asleep. The coughing has completely stopped (took about 20-25 minutes) and now he's sleeping soundly. Thanks so much for posting this remedy! :-)
My grandmother swore by this remedy and I didn't believe it. My 1.5 year old has coughed incessantly at night for almost 4 months and we have tried everything: antihistamines, asthma inhalers, cough medicines, and other home remedies. Ok I don't know how this even worked for any of these people! I just tried it with my niece who has been coughing non-stop since yesterday and its been over 10 mins and NOTHING!!! I even put vicks on her chest and back like some people did. I thought this was supposed to be some "miraculous home remedy for toddlers" like everyone claimed....apparently not. Sorry but this did not work.

Our 2 year old has been coughing for weeks while trying to sleep. Put baby vicks on his feet, sleep suit on and bang. Slept through comfortably with no cough. Hope it works tonight too. Amazing!
wow, i cannot believe that vicks on the feet works! it makes you laugh at first but when it works and stops your child coughing it's a miracle !!

I'm so glad I found this site! Our 4 year old grandson is spending a few nights with us and has been coughing constantly during the night. I found the Vicks and applied a generous amount on each foot and covered his feet with socks. Within 10 minutes his cough was starting to subside. It has been 20 minutes and no more coughing and he is now peacefully asleep. Sure beats the cough medicine we tried last night! Many, many thanks for this reminder as I remember my own mom applying Vicks on my chest, back, throat when I was sick as a child! Just goes to show we can learn a lot from our moms and grandmas!
15 month old still coughing till she throws up...thought i hadn't put it on thick enough so i tried some more...nothing. coughing non-stop and i put it on like 45 minutes ago...
I'd heard of this before, but never tried it because it just sounds a little ridiculous. :). But I found this blog last night and, desperate to find relief for our littlest one, I decided to give it a shot. It took about 20 minutes to work, but it *did* work! We went from hours and hours of coughing fits (which were coming about a minute or so apart), to absolutely no coughing at all. It was incredible! At around the 20 minute mark, the coughing stopped and he didn't cough again all night.
This is definitely an example of not believing it until I saw it. And I'm so glad I tried it! (Btw, we use a natural rub, not the Vicks brand....and it still worked.)
Hopefully I say something that let's you know that this is so true...my 19 month old had been coughing every night 4 days, I thought it was allergies or being over heated...gave her allergy meds...didn't work, juice...didn't work...vicks on chest....nope, finally said it couldn't hurt, vicks on feet with socks...one cough while putting on, now 12 mins later....a non coughing fast sleep beautiful baby....thank you for sharing....while asleep and me typing this out, my baby just took a deep sigh of relief breath like she was happy to be asleep....awww thanks again
This is Naomi Setsabi. I'm a mother to a 2 years old 8 month old baby. He's been coughing non-stop over the past couple of days and it has been a dry cough. I've just rubbed a thick blob of Vicks Vaporub to the soles of both his feet. I can not believe this. Its been minutes, he's still not coughing. I can finally go to sleep. I've BBM all my friends to try this remedy and asked them to forward the message on Facebook too. I can't wait to tell this to my husband in the morning.

My 3 yr old is getting over a cold so the coughing part of it started yesterday. I thought I was gonna scratch my eyes out if she didn't stop coughing. Then I woke her up and tried to make her blow her nose to get drainage out. Miss sleepy head acted like she forgot how to blow and cried instead...making the cough worse and my nerves shot! So, I Googled.., this pops up.., and VOILA sheer uninterrupted, blissfully pleasing silence. Hallelujah!

My 1.5 year old is coughing non stop. I found this site and remembered I bought some last week for no reason. Never bought it before. So I thought "wicked I got some" but it says not for children under 2! Why? Should I put a little on feet? Confused..
My 3 year old had been coughing right before going to bed and after getting up. I read this blog and tried it out on him at night when I couldn't possibly find a general pediatrician.
I didn't believe it at first and I don't know if Vicks on feet stopped his coughing. But truth is he did stop coughing and went to sleep peacefully. I don't know what happens come next morning but for now its totally true. This remedy does work.
I also applied it on his chest + my mom gave him some roasted clove with honey. Don't know which one/all worked but I totally believe it at the moment. Why wouldn't a parent of a 3 year old. Thank you.
I tried this about an hour ago on my 3 yr old, and so far it has not worked, he is still coughing.
Whao! It works. After days of coughing and sleepless night, my 2yrs old finally had a deep sleep. At 3am, I couldn't cope with my son continuous cough, so I Google natural remedy for for children and saw different ideas. Rubbing Vicks was easier for me but I didn't have it so I used the African Robb. Behold , did the same job, my son slept off with 2mins. At 4.04am, my son hasn't cough and still having a good sleep. Satisfied mum can now sleep. Thank for this great idea. X

tried it last night on my son and it worked.he still coughed every now and then but nothing like he was earlier when he was almost throwing up from coughing so hard.i still put some on his chest and a little under his nose just in case. He was able to get to sleep and that's what mattered. Even cough syrup didn't work like vicks on the feet.

Didn't work for us. My 3 year old was up most of the night coughing. Now it's naptime, I did the vaporub on her feet and chest and am running a humidifier. Nothing is helping the cough, and she is getting crankier and crankier by the minute.
It took a bit longer to work for my son, about 15 minutes. But now he is peacefully napping after spending all morning cranky and miserable.
Hopefully this will help someone:
4 year old coughing for 2 hours every 10 seconds or so.
Gave him cough medicine, didn't work, put Vicks on his chest, didn't work.
Tried the Vicks and socks on his feet. Maybe 4 coughs since I did it over 15 minutes.
There are 4 comments out of 100 that say that this does not work. The rest say it does. And I found another website with a similar yes to no ratio in the comments. Although this blogs comments are moderated so take that with a grain of salt.
I prayed with my son that he would be able to stop also cause God is the master doctor!
With little kids under 2 years old "they" now recommend baby balm instead of Vicks. Don't know if it would work the same. Don't know if it would harm the under 2 to use the regular Vicks. All the best everyone. Now off to bed (4am here).

He did smile sarcastically and to that I said " there is no harm in trying" So last night I applied vicks onto the feet and he slept all night without coughing. After half hour of the application I thought of applying vicks to my feet as well as I was having bad cough as well. A miracle happened and I also slept whole night without getting up with a cough. I am a father who has just searched online for a quick cure for my son's non-stop coughing tonite. I came across this cure of rubbing vicks on the foot with a pair of socks to cover afterwards, and I quickly tried it. IT WORKS! Now I can sleep peacefully as my son can also sleep peacefully. I am seriously the last person in the world to believe in these kinds of remedies, and I read every comment left here because I wanted to make sure this wasn't some fake blog sponsored by Vick's.
I went to my Facebook page and inquired of my mom-friends if they'd ever heard of this, and almost all of them had and said it definitely works.
My experience: After my 2.5 yr old barked all the way thru his nap, we went out and bought honey, a plug-in vaporizer, and some Baby Rub. I slathered the Baby Rub on his piggies, put on socks, then put some on his back and chest. 3 or 4 spoonfuls of honey + a warm mist humidifier too.
Well. I put him down at bedtime and heard not one single cough YAY.
I will add that he did wake up approx 2.5 hours into his sleep to cough at which point I reapplied more Baby Rub to his chest. He was up for a while coughing and crying but eventually fell asleep again until 515am. More waking and crying, but eventually put himself back to sleep.
So while I wouldn't guarantee this is 100% perfect, it's a huge improvement over doing nothing at all.
I did notice a few people indicating their bad luck with this therapy...I wonder if the type of cough matters. Like some kids have a cough associated with a cold...some have a croupy cough (this is what my boy has)...some have coughing related to allergies. Maybe this therapy doesn't work for allergy-based coughs...? Not sure but I thought worth mentioning.
I don't have Vicks but "puma salf". Rubbed some onto my daughter's feet and chest and after a whole afternoon of coughing, it has stopped. I am a believer now!!!

its 12:21 am.. I just tried the Vicks on the FEET.. IT WORKS!
My son was coughing since it turned dark outside.. hes 7 months old by the way.. he kept coughing and throwing up.. we went through 5-9 recieving blankets.. we went through the last one.. we are on one of my White T-shirts rite now.. he fell asleep after 10 mintues!.. all i did was a generous Portion of vicks rub on the feet with Socks and BAM..

My 20 month old has been coughing for the last couple nights. He tosses and turns and did not get good sleep. I put on the baby Vicks rub on feet and chest and put his foot pjs on him after 3 to 4minutes no coughing... Slept soundly the rest of the night. Thank you.
Seriously...had heard this forever. Thought it was the craziest idea yet. My husband and I were desperate for our 2 1/2 year old to get a good night's sleep. I shook my head as I applied the disgusting smelling Vicks on the bottom of his feet. It didn't clear up in two to three minutes like others claimed. But within ten minutes, NO COUGHING! I still can't believe it honestly.

My son has been having this cough and stopped up nose for about 2 weeks. I gave him PediaCare for cough and unfortunately it didn't help as well. And just today his cough has gotten worse, he couldn't sleep, I couldn't sleep, his dad couldn't sleep so I had to pull out the Blackberry and Google "how to stop a toddlers cough".. And I found this. I gave him some warm tea with honey, pulled out the VICKS and his favorite pair of socks and applied a thick layer of VICKS to his feet and lightly to his chest and covered him up. Within 20min , NO COUGH and he is sound asleep.
I appreciate this and this could work for all parents who are skeptical about over the counter drugs.

Was SO skeptical, but of course a mother would try anything once,so come morning my 3 year old still hadn't slept & actually began to throw up from coughing so much. I read this & just had to try it out but decided to rub all over his chest & back as well, & it actually began to work so quickly. It truly is an amazingly easy & quick remedy. I'm just SO estatic that my baby got to sleep peacefully.
